This announcement includes preliminary details of the scientific program, and accommodation details for the Symposium. --------------------------------------- | Scientific Program | --------------------------------------- The program will consist of a mixture of invited talks, contributed papers, and poster presentations. Invited speakers and their topics include: P. Diamond (Jodrell) Space VLBI observations of masers D. Gabuzda (JIVE) VSOP Polarization observations T. Krichbaum (MPIfR) Observations of Intraday Variable Radio Sources A. Marscher (Boston) Evolution of the Polarized Intensity of AGNs H. Marshall (MIT) Chandra X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy of Quasars R. Porcas (MPIfR) Phase-reference observations with VSOP R. Sambruna* (PSU) Multi-wavelength campaigns K. Shibata (Kyoto) MHD Simulations of Jets from Accretion Disks I. Snellen (Cambridge) Giga-Hertz Peaked Spectrum sources (* = to be confirmed). Proceedings will be published within two months of the symposium. This is a strict requirement from the source of funds for the Symposium! Conference participants will be expected to submit their contributions by Friday February 4th, 2000, or to bring camera-ready copies to the Symposium. The latex template for papers will be made available from the Symposium WWW page within the next few weeks. Late abstracts (using the template available from the Symposium WWW page) will be accepted for poster papers until the week before the conference, display space permitting. A conference banquet is being planned, tentatively for the evening of Thursday January 20th. (Vegetarians will be catered for.) Details of post-conference tours to Usuda and Nobeyama (weather conditions permitting), Mitaka, the historic city of Kamakura and the January sumo tournament will be contained in the next Announcement. ---------------------------------------------------- | Visas | ---------------------------------------------------- Delegates from many countries will not require a visa to enter Japan. If in any doubt, please contact the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate for more details. Supporting letters and documentation will be supplied on request (e-mail: vsop_ps@vsop.isas.ac.jp). ---------------------------------------------------- | Accommodation | ---------------------------------------------------- A block booking has been made for conference attendees at the Dai-Ichi Hotel near Fuchinobe station (the closest station to ISAS), a 20 minute walk from ISAS. The Hotel has agreed to offer a reduced rate to conference delegates that will be approximately 6,000 yen per night. There are no rooms available at the ISAS Lodge during the conference. (At present US$1 is about 105 yen.) A template e-mail form is attached below for booking accommodation at the Dai-Ichi Hotel. A map and images showing how to reach the hotel will be added to the web page within the next week. The hotel accepts most major credit cards (but not Diners Club). ---------------------------------------------------- | Facilities | ---------------------------------------------------- Two overhead projectors, video, and electronic (e.g. powerpoint) display facilities will be made available for oral presentations. Posters will be on display for the duration of the conference. A limited number of terminals for participants to check e-mail etc. will also be made available. Participants may also be contacted by fax during the conference at either +81-42-759-8340 or +81-42-769-8949. ---------------------------------------------------- | Registration | ---------------------------------------------------- There will be a modest registration fee for the conference, which will cover refreshments during the conference, a copy of the conference proceedings and the conference banquet. Payment of the registration fee will be accepted, in Japanese yen only, at the conference registration desk. Travelers checks (and travellers cheques!) can be cashed at banks near ISAS, though it is a somewhat time-consuming process. ATMs at Narita Airport will accept most credit cards, and there is at least one ATM in Machida (two stops by train from Fuchinobe) which will accept credit cards issued outside Japan.
